Warning: Nostalgia ahead So here is the story of our trip to Monterey on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. The stars of the show: Daniel, Nate, Steve, and me. At 2:20 AM, August 17, 2004, I set out from my house in Cypress, CA to rendezvous with the rest of the crew at Steve's house.
 Armed with the following...

In the Red Stallion
It was just me on the road...lonely
I arrive at 2:58AM...we promised to meet a 3...the clock in my car is 5 minutes early
Steve was happy to see me
Then Nate and Danny arrived 4 minutes after I did...everyone was extremely on time. The reason for our timeliness? No girls.

Then we prepared to set off. Nate still had time to check his Fantasy Sports team.
Our method of transportation. Inifiniti I30, fully loaded. We cruise in style.
It was 3:30AM. Before we left, we needed to fill the tank however, so off to the Chevron near Steve's house. This was our point of departure.

 Odometer trip reset...mileage, 0.
And we're off. Our status a few hours later...

Our captain for the first leg of the trip, he's not quite as tired thankfully.
 Still later...

And while it's still dark outside, one more pic before I knocked out myself.
A few hours later still, the sun is beginning to come up.

 Snack time.
The boys are awake and all smiles.

Steve just keeps eating. He said, "Weird, the Sour Cream and Onion tastes just like Ranch." We said, "It is Ranch."
 Scenery.

 The bugs on our windshield.

So we're transferring freeways and a big semi is in front of us. It's also going very slow.
Annoying? Yes, until we saw the side of the truck.

So then I was the first to notice we were now running on empty. So we found the closest gas station and made a quick stop.

 Happy campers.

Unhappy camper. Just kidding. He does that alot.
So I told Steve to be a bum and wash my windows and I'd give him a quarter. He was more than happy. Notice his smile.

 Getting ready to leave.

Steve trying to be like me...this is his fifth attempt at a watch picture.
This is your new captain speaking. Getting closer.

So we arrive at the aquarium...and it's not open yet.

Naturally we're hungry, so with some time to kill, we seek out the nearest McDonald's. Steve types it into the Nav system and lo and behold, no McDonald's are found...

At first it's funny, but then Steve get's desperate as Nate and Danny sadly look on as their comrade's sanity slowly detioriates.

So we drive around until we find one. Nav takes us to two non-existent McDonalds so we decide just to double back and go to one we saw earlier. It's now 9:25AM.

Bathroom break before eating. I hoped I could get a picture of Nate's ding a ling, but he caught me peeking.

Steve can't decide what to order.
Daniel is confused as well and asks Steve. Blind leading the blind. Just kidding, they were just posing, they knew what they wanted, really.
 "It's too hot, I'm suing."
"HEY NO PIK-CHARS WHILE I EAT!"
"Please stop yelling!! It makes me sad!"
So I just took pictures of this goose eating.
And then while we were leaving...a homeless man was trying to get the goose to follow it across the street. Dinner perhaps? We will never know.

 Back at the aquarium, parking.

 Outside.

Inside the aquarium, buying tickets. Right on time. 10:10 AM.

The Directory.
Steve sees it and is confused.
So we get Nate a wheelchair...Steve wants one too but we reject him.

 Kelp forest.

A dome with sardines swimming in circles.
At the huge Tuna Outer Bay tank.

Tuna feeding show. (The tuna pictured are all 300+ pounds and at least 6 feet long).

After the show, we sit and rest. Being up on and off since 2 is starting to get to us. We're tired.

After our short break, we go to the shark exhibit and play with the shark dancer masks.

 Ray exhibit.
 Inside the bubble.

At the kid's arts and crafts corner. We decide to make shark hats. Nate is tired though so he doesn't make one.

 I am retarded.
So we finish our hats at 12:30PM.
And then we sport them. We're not gay. :mamoru:
Danny joins in on the fun.

Nate is too tired to see how much fun we're having.

 Danny's shark In-N-Out hat.
I mod mine. I am now ready to do battle. Notice the Predator hunt markings.
As I wait for an opponent to battle me, Steve is now wishing he had a wheelchair also.
So after resting for a bit we go to see penguins, after I first try to touch this whale.

I can be a penguin too.

 So can Danny.
As you can see, Danny is tired now.
So we head back to the dark Tuna exhibit, 2nd floor this time where there are benches.
And each person finds their own spot, whether it be the bench or the ground. And they take a nap. And I snap pictures.

Bums (It's ok cause it's actually really dark in there, the flash makes it bright though).

It's so dark that some people don't see them lying there...and a lady comes in and almost sits on Nate's head. So Danny is the first to wake up because he needs to go to the bathroom (it's been 2 hours since they've laid down to sleep).
After his bathroom run, he prepares to wow the crowd. First by presenting a show.
They are not impressed, so he does a dance.
Failing again, he prepares for the ultimate event. Olympic Men's Floor Gymnastics.

The lady in the red sees him and she says, "You must have failed the Olympics." Guess no gold for Danny. Nate continues to sleep so I stick my key up his nose.
Then I practice wheeling with his wheelchair.
Then everybody gets up and we prepare to leave. Danny leaves the aquarium visitors with a message.
So we walk out of the aquarium and go shopping along Cannery Row in Monterey.
 So cute.

I'm not sure what's going on here. I was just taking the picture.

Danny tries on a mood ring, and finding his mood is "relaxed", he proceeds to take it off...

Finding he can't, his mood changes from "relaxed" to "agitated".
Nate plays, and hurts his leg...doesn't look like he's in pain but he is.

We continue on outside. A nice car.
 Outside Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Me, stealing his box of chocolates.
 Hungry, time to dine.

Dinner ends, we prepare to leave. Danny is the new captain.

 Riding.

 Shhh, he's asleep.
So I knock out as well and Danny drives a bit over 100 miles. He gets tired. So we take a break.

 The Noble Steed.
The gas station out in the middle of nowhere.
This is your new captain speaking.

Trip meter when I take over, 546 miles...179 miles left to go.

I drive for a while, they knock out, and I take pictures of them while I drive. Dangerous? Yes. I like to live dangerously.

Getting closer, 600 miles on the trip. Notice my speed. :)
So right outside of Magic Mountain in Valencia, I notice a set of very peculiar tail lights. I get close to investigate...
 "Everybody wake up!"

The guy noticed us taking pictures, and floored it. We have the video. If anyone is interested let me know :). Everyone's now awake. We go for a bit longer. It's 10:05PM.

Told you he likes to do that a lot.
So we get back to the Chevron we left in the morning at no later than 11:00 PM.
 Old dependable.
 Bugs.

Nate and Danny's reactions to the bugs.

Steve tries to fill the tank up one more time. 4th time today.
It won't work, so he tries the other pump.

 He's getting angry.
 Defeat.
 Final count, 713.4 miles.
 Back at Steve's.

 The garage door is locked.
 Pushing doesn't work.
 Calling does.
So we ended up watching a movie and eating a bit. Then I set out for home, dead tired. I get home at last, it's 1:43 AM.

Parked. The end. That took way too long. |
